چکیده

To My Parents iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I express my sincere gratitude to HIM for everything. I extend my sincere thanks to my advisor Prof. Cassiano R. E. de Oliveira, working with whom was a very pleasing experience, both personally and intellectually. I appreciate his help in guiding me in learning new subject matters. I would also like to thank Ryosuke, whom I bothered the most while trying to understand the intricacies of EVENT. I appreciate his patience in answering my series of questions in the best possible way. I would also like to thank Ignacio for his assistance in the linux administrative work of our cluster machine. I appreciate the members of Neely research lab, my friends and my elder brother for his initial financial help for getting my student visa. I would also want to thank my sisters who always support me. I also want to thank my parents-in-law for their understanding and support. Last, but not the least I would like to thank my husband Saswat very much for his constant guidance and encouragement. I am very fortunate to get such a understanding and supportive husband. I am sure to get the similar support from him while doing my PhD.

A spherical harmonics—Finite element discretization of the self-adjoint angular flux neutron transport equation

The spherical harmonics (PN) method is widely used in solving the neutron transport equation, but it has some disadvantages. One of them omes from the complexity of the PN equations. Another one comes from the difficulty of dealing with the vacuum boundary condition exactly. In his paper, the PN method is applied to the self-adjoint angular flux (SAAF) neutron transport equation and a set of PN...

Verification of the Coupled Space-angle Adaptivity Algorithm for the Finite Element-spherical Harmonics Method via the Method of Manufactured Solutions

This paper describes the verification of the recently developed space-angle self-adaptive algorithm for the finite element-spherical harmonics method via the Method of Manufactured Solutions. This method provides a simple, yet robust way for verifying the theoretical properties of the adaptive algorithm and interfaces very well with the underlying second-order, even-parity trasnport formulation...

Speeding up the Stress Analysis of Hollow Circular FGM Cylinders by Parallel Finite Element Method

In this article, a parallel computer program is implemented, based on Finite Element Method, to speed up the analysis of hollow circular cylinders, made from Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). FGMs are inhomogeneous materials, which their composition gradually varies over volume. In parallel processing, an algorithm is first divided to independent tasks, which may use individual or shared da...

A Non-linear Optimal Discontinuous Petrov-galerkin Method for Stabilising the Solution of the Transport Equation

This paper describes a new Non-Linear Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (NDPG) method and application to the one-speed Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) for space-time problems. The purpose of the method is to remove unwanted oscillations in the transport solution which occur in the vicinity of sharp flux gradients, while improving computational efficiency and numerical accuracy. This is achieved ...

A New Restructured Shaded Pole Induction Motor- 3D Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Verification

Shaded pole induction motors, despite the simplicity and low cost, are difficult to analyze particularly in the equivalent circuit methods, due to the asymmetric structure, saturation, harmonics, inaccurate estimation of leakage inductances and skew. Hence, 3D numerical methods could be very useful in the design and optimization stage. This paper presents the 3D transient finite element analysi...

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of Stress Intensity Factors in a Spherical Pressure Vessel with Functionally Graded Coating

This research pertains to the three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) of the stress intensity factors (SIFs) along the crack front in a spherical pressure vessel coated with functionally graded material (FGM). The vessel is subjected to internal pressure and thermal gradient. The exponential function is adopted for property of FGMs. SIFs are obtained for a wide variety of crack sha...
